The first DC Latino superhero movie, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and an animated “Spider-Verse” are on this year’s slate.
The latest superhero flicks. And the topic of who will soon be considered the best superhero movie.
DC Studios has been rebranded and appointed James Gunn as its new co-head in an effort to compete with Marvel Studios, which is entering its sixth phase of connected-universe domination. Sony, meanwhile, is determined to start its own successful Spider-Man spinoff brand by releasing movies based on the villains of the Marvel Comics hero.
When it comes to competing studios, will Marvel Studios finally have some competition in 2023? Will any of this year’s DC superhero movies be important enough to avoid Gunn’s chopping block as he plots out his future slate? Is there any truth to rumours of a Kraven the Hunter film?

08. QUANTUMANIA: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP FILM. (FEB. 17)
The Ant-Man series is Marvel’s most entertaining (although the Thors seem to be taking aim at that title as of late). Which is saying a lot, considering how much humour is infused into every MCU film. The movie debut of Jonathan Majors’ time-traveling Kang the Conqueror, the next Thanos in the MCU, is more exciting than the possibility of Ant-Man becoming a trilogy thanks to Paul Rudd’s comedic talents. He debuted as a subtype of the supervillain in a Disney Plus episode of “Loki,” but today, in the midst of the MCU’s Phase 5 production, he is the ultimate antagonist that all future MCU projects will strive to defeat. In two upcoming films, “Kang Dynasty” in 2025 and “Secret Wars” in 2026, he is the driving force behind the formation of a new team of Avengers.
07. “SHAZAM!—THE FURY OF THE GODS” (MARCH 17)
With a single proclamation of the word “Shazam,” the boyish Billy Batson is transformed into the adult superhero Shazam. Asher Angel reprises his role as the boy (played by Zachary Levi). Hespera and Kalypso, played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu respectively, are not happy that Billy and his siblings are using their god-given abilities.
06. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 (MAY 5)
Gunn may now be the Kevin Feige of DC Studios, but he still hasn’t finished the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which is the job that likely landed him the top spot there in the first place thanks to the success of its pop-music-infused tone. That and his own personal universe of “Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker.” Other than in future Avengers movies, this may be the final time we see characters like Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) in the MCU. It’s highly improbable that Marvel Studios will choose another director to do further Guardians of the Galaxy films because Gunn’s directing DNA is so deeply ingrained in the MCU franchise. Given Gunn’s previous hints that a pivotal character will perish in “Vol. 3,” it seems likely that this will be the final film in the series.

05. SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (JUNE 2)
It’s the follow-up to 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which won an Oscar, and stars Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a black and Puerto Rican teenager. Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) returns to assist Miles in his fight against Spider-Man 2099. (Oscar Isaac). There’s no denying that Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise is the best standalone spider series.
04. THE FLASH (JUNE 16)
There have been rumours that “The Flash” would be a time-travel plot that would reset the DC film franchise. Gunn has made it abundantly apparent that the majority, if not all, of the Zack Snyder Justice League era will not be a part of his new vision at DC Studios, suggesting that this film may now be a farewell to that era. That doesn’t rule out a successful run for “The Flash.” It has (so far) survived the several recent issues surrounding main actor Ezra Miller, and it will still represent the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, which may be remembered as the geek cultural moment of 2023.
03. THE MARVELS (NOV. 10)
Connecting to two other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Disney Plus programmes, this “Captain Marvel” sequel marks Marvel Studios’ first superheroine-led franchise. Alongside Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, other stars include Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris, “WandaVision”) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani, “Ms. Marvel”). As a young woman, Iman Vellani enjoyed reading Ms. Marvel. She is currently portraying her on TV.
02. KRAVEN THE HUNTER (OCT. 6)
Sony is persistent in its pursuit of turning Spider-nemeses Man’s into moneymaking film properties. In terms of quality, the Venom movies have been inconsistent. The bite that was expected from the vampire film “Morbius” was missing. We’ll give it another go with “Kraven the Hunter,” starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Will it alter the storyline? Or will Sony’s co-productions with Marvel Studios and the animated Spider-Man movies be the only ones that get any traction?
01. AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM (DEC. 25)
For DC, “Aquaman” was a $1 billion wind of change. Given the upheaval at DC Studios, it’s likely that the upcoming sequel will be Jason Momoa’s last in the underwater franchise. If Gunn decides to bring Aquaman back, it will likely be with a different actor. With Gunn having already stated that he will be introducing a new Superman to the big screen, this film will be the final installment in the Snyder Justice League canon. Similarly to how Gunn has said he would consider reuniting former Superman Henry Cavill in a new DC role, Momoa may have the same impact at the box office. If DC ever decides to adapt its baddest bastich, he would be perfect for the role of Lobo.
