Marvel’s Phase 5 Disney+ show may depend on the MCU’s SHIELD replacement.
Secret Invasion’s plot demonstrates how the MCU’s new SHIELD is becoming an integral part of Marvel’s Phase 5 plans. Several years have passed after SHIELD’s demise in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and a new intelligence organisation has emerged in its place. As a result of the events at Westview, SWORD was established, gradually filling the role previously played by Nick Fury’s SHIELD.
There is mounting evidence that SWORD will make a comeback on Marvel’s Secret Invasion. According to rumours, Emilia Clarke of “Game of Thrones” fame would portray Abigail Brand, the director of SWORD and a mutant intelligence officer, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s likely that Brand’s function in Secret Invasion is closely related to Director Hayward’s group SWORD, given that she is the most prominent individual affiliated with SWORD in the comic books. Despite Hayward’s defeat paving the opportunity for a new leader to emerge, Brand may not immediately assume control of SWORD. In Secret Invasion, however, she might be portrayed by SWORD. And it’s clear why she was cast in Disney+’s Nick Fury series.
SWORD IS IDEAL FOR SECRET INVASION
Given SWORD’s make-up, the group seems like a logical choice for Secret Invasion. After all, countering extraterrestrial menace is standard operating procedure for them. It’s only a matter of time before they get engaged if they know, or find out, about the Skrulls’ existence on Earth. Considering SWORD’s origins, it only makes sense for them to play a role in Secret Invasion, as the organisation was specifically created to deal with threats such as these. When SHIELD isn’t around, they’re the government agency with the best chance of stopping them. It’s possible that no other group has the resources or expertise to fight the shapeshifting Skrulls.
It’s possible that Nick Fury will join forces with SWORD after Secret Invasion, when the Skrulls begin their takeover of Earth. Fury evidently has Skrulls supporting him, as demonstrated by his partnership with Talos, but they are unlikely to be sufficient. Fury and Brand (and maybe the rest of SWORD) working together in Phase 5 could be crucial to eliminating the Skrull threat. They might have access to information that could be used to expose the Skrulls and possibly counter their sophisticated weaponry.
SWORD’S ROLE AFTER SECRET INVASION?
Potentially other MCU productions will incorporate SWORD, including WandaVision and Secret Invasion. The Marvels may use them, especially Monica Rambeau, who already has ties to SWORD and is featured prominently in the film. There’s also the question of whether or not SWORD is interested in Tony Stark’s armour ideas, which raises the spectre of the Armor Wars. Yet, Vision Quest, a new series rumoured to be in development at Disney+, is likely the best contender for SWORD’s return. Considering that SWORD is the organisation that ultimately turned on White Vision, they could be a formidable foe.
